Services & Pricing

Fine Tuning – $150

Pianos should be tuned at minimum every 6-12 months. This service is best for those who have had their piano tuned within the year.

Pitch Adjustment – $75

A pitch adjustment is typically for customers who have not tuned their piano in a few years, which causes their piano’s pitch to fall outside the acceptable threshold.

Cleaning & Detail – $250

Cleaning and detail is not just for aesthetics. It can lead to friction in the action, which may result in sticking keys and potentially more serious issues if not addressed.This deep cleaning service should be done every 3-4 years.

Regulation – $850

Regular regulation of a piano enhances its playability and maximizes the striking potential of the hammers. After my regulation service, you will notice a substantial change in the touch, tone and feel of your piano. All pianos should be regulated every 5 years so they will continue to work properly.

Voicing – $200

How often should my piano be tuned?

The frequency of tuning can vary, but generally, most pianos should be tuned every 6 to 12 months. Pianos that are played regularly or located in environments with fluctuating humidity or temperature may require tuning every season or every three months. Pianos used for professional purposes, such as those in performance venues or colleges, often need to be tuned more frequently, sometimes as often as once a month or even weekly.

What is A440?

The explanation is actually very simple. A440 is the standard that has been designated in the United States for the note “A” above middle C. In other words, that string (or reed, or electronic pulse, or whatever else depending on the instrument) should vibrate at exactly 440 vibrations per second (or 440 Hz). This standard differs country to country.

This matters so instruments playing together all tune to the same standard. If one instrument is tuning to A440 and another to A442 they will sound good when playing alone, but will not when playing together. This is what we reference when saying a piano is “up to pitch”.

My piano sounds fine to me. Why do I still need to tune it regularly?

The longer you delay tuning your piano, the harder it becomes for the instrument to maintain its pitch. Each time the piano is played, it will attempt to return to its previous string tension. If you wait several years between tunings, the piano will likely go out of tune more quickly. However, tuning your piano every 6 to 12 months helps it stay in tune more consistently.

Regular tuning is not just about ensuring the notes are accurate; it’s also a preventative measure. Having a professional piano technician inspect your instrument regularly can identify and address minor issues before they develop into larger, more costly problems.

What causes a piano to go out of tune?

Primarily, it’s time and humidity that affect tuning. When humidity increases, the wood in the piano expands, causing the notes to go sharp; when humidity decreases, the wood contracts, leading the notes to go flat. These changes are typically small, so it may take some time before a noticeable shift in pitch occurs. Over extended periods, pianos generally go flat as the strings gradually stretch.

Are there any risks with pitch adjustments?

Yes. There is always a risk that a string may break, although it’s unlikely. By examining your strings on-site we will be able to give you a better idea of risk.

If a string does break, the decision to replace it is entirely up to you. Since most notes on a piano are equipped with 2-3 strings, the sound may not be significantly affected. If the sound doesn’t bother you, replacing the string may not be necessary.

If you prefer to restore the sound and decide to replace the string, it will need to be specially ordered. Once installed, the string will require a brief period of tuning every few weeks until it settles and fully stretches.
